More than once, James M. Crosby has stacked his chips on the table and lost. There was the Mexican shrimp farm that lost $1 million in 1973-74; Biff-Burger, the portable fast-food restaurant chain that bombed in 1976; the Marine World/Africa USA theme park in California, sold in 1979 at a $1 million loss.

Crosby is a long-shot bettor, the sort who's willing to lose millions for a chance at making billions. If he hadn't been, he might never have transformed.......
